With news coming in from those who have been supporting us over recent days weeks and months, and a Musical evening in London on the horizon (November 19), we have lots to catch you up on in our rolling blog of news. Kicking us off, is a phenomenal achievement by an inspiring supporter of longstanding. Gillian Evans, mother and hero, braved brume and blisters to walk across Wales for us, and raised an extremely impressive total to give a real boost to our coffers as she did so. We cannot thank you enough Gillian, for your efforts on our behalf, for your determination and generosity, and for this significant boost to our fundraising. You are an inspiration! Here is Gillian’s account of the day: |
Across Wales Walk 20th June 2015 – 44 miles

Having watched people run, walk or hobble across our land over the years as they neared the end of the Across Wales Walk, I decided I would do it ‘one day’. Reaching 50 was my inspiration, to raise money for Charlotte’s Helix and a local cancer charity.
Having followed a training plan, and plenty of walking, which included getting lost in a wood for some time, I felt ready for the challenge. The support was amazing, my brother accompanied my from the start which was at 3.40am on a drizzly, misty morning. We walked 19 miles before breakfast, which was particularly welcome that day. My other brother took over and when we stopped for lunch, Pete and Helen Missen were there to support and cheer me on. Our 2 daughters joined later along with another supporter, and I finished at 6pm, feeling great (I won’t mention the blisters).

I admit it took a couple of days before I wanted to don my walking boots again, but am now thinking of doing the challenge the other way round, from the English Border to the sea at Aberystwyth.
I have been overwhelmed by the support and encouragement I received, as well as generous sponsorship amounting to almost £2000. I have been able to chat with many people about Charlotte’s Helix, and spreading awareness of the project has been a fulfilling part of my challenge.
Walking 44 miles was not as painful or as hard as watching an eating disorder try to destroy a young person and her family. Our daughter got anorexia at fourteen, seven years ago, she is recovering and currently doing well – but the horror and sadness of living with this cruel illness make Charlotte’s Helix so important, and I hope they get the support they need and deserve.
